Manuel Rodríguez Lozano (1891–1971, Mexico City, Mexico), an educator and painter often associated with the Mexican avant-garde movement Los Contemporáneos, which emerged in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Manuel Rodríguez Lozano created intimate works in which dreamlike scenes unfold through layers of paint. Mysterious and melancholic, Rodríguez Lozano’s images often depict figures in desolate landscapes. Leaving viewers with more questions than answers, his paintings are exercises in introspection and wonder, perhaps offering an indirect expression of his homosexuality.
