Tina Modotti (1896, Udine, Italy – 1942, Mexico City, Mexico) was an artist and activist whose life and personality left an indelible mark on Mexican art history. She arrived in Mexico City in 1923 with her then-partner, Edward Weston, and documented post-Revolutionary Mexico. Its landscapes, working people, and folklore became a means through which she expressed her leftist politics. She grew close to artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, documenting several of Rivera’s murals, and her social circle included artists and left-wing intellectuals. In 1930, Modotti was exiled from Mexico after being falsely accused of involvement in an assassination plot against then-president Pascual Ortiz Rubio. She subsequently ended her artistic career and devoted her life to political activism.
