Founded in Mexico City in 2018, MASA walks the line between art and design — collectible, experimental, and always in question. To show, to curate, to write, to build, to provoke, to educate, and to learn: these are the desires. MASA is cornmeal — a pliable material that quells hunger and sustains culture.
With a physical, digital, and conceptual presence, MASA curates exhibitions and experiences that foster conversation around material culture, bringing together work with integrity, direction, and value.
MASA began as a nomadic project, staging site-specific exhibitions across Mexico City in unexpected and evolving settings. Notable exhibitions include Collective/Collectible (2019), the inaugural show bringing together artists and designers living in or shaped by Mexico; Elementos Vitales (2021), presenting five filmworks by Ana Mendieta in Oaxaca — the first large scale exhibition of her work in Mexico — alongside newly commissioned installations by Frida Escobedo, Pia Camil, Adeline de Monseignat, Solange Pessoa, and EWE Studio; and Intervención/Intersección (2022) at Rockefeller Center, New York, MASA’s first New York exhibition. In 2023, to mark its fifth anniversary, MASA established a permanent home in a 600-square-metre colonial house in San Miguel Chapultepec — a building originally constructed in the 19th century and long a gathering place for artists and architects.
During Mexico City’s annual art week, MASA has developed a sustained program of collaborative exhibitions with leading international galleries, including Luhring Augustine and Modern Art, London.
MASA was founded by Age Salajõe, Héctor Esrawe, and Brian Thoreen, alongside Roberto Diaz Sesma and Isaac Bissu — a collective whose backgrounds in art, design, and architecture continue to shape MASA’s presentation of design at its boundaries. Curator Su Wu has been a close collaborator since MASA’s founding, shaping the gallery’s curatorial vision across its most significant programs.
